Dera Ghazi Khan is one of the largest districts of
Punjab. It is very strategically located, as it has borders with 2 other
provinces, Sindh and N.W.F. P. The district has a varied land structure.
It is houses a semi-desert steppe, as well as Canal irrigated land.
Other than that the Indus river flows through the district, giving it
quite a varied architecture.

The desert portions of Dera Ghazi Khan are home to a
large number of resident and migratory species. The winter visitors to
these regions include Saker and Peregrine Falcons. Breeding Falcons in
this region are the Red necked Falcon and the Laggar Falcon. Other
Raptors such as Tawny and Steppe Eagles, and Buzzards are common
visitors. Double passage migrants to D. G Khan include Dalmatian
Pelicans and MacQueens Bustards. Cream colored and Indian Coursers can
also reliably be encountered here. Rare birds here include Black bellied
Sandgrouse.
The riverain areas are home to a wide variety of resident
and migratory species. These include a large number of waders. Migratory
ducks that occur here include Greylag and Bar headed Geese, Ruddy
Shelducks, Ferruginous Pochards, Red crested Pochards. Other than these
Black Storks can also be found here in winters. Some globally threatened
birds that are common here include Rufous vented
Prinia and Black bellied Tern. As a matter of fact, the Black bellied
Tern is the commonest tern specie in the whole D. G Khan district. Other
common and special species are Rufous fronted Prinia, Sindh Sparrow and
Sindh Woodpecker. Great Thick-knees are also found in these regions.

The Canal irrigated tracts are home to the most number of
species. Common birds in these tracts are Sindh Sparrow, Indian Robin,
Rosy Starlings. Scarce Passage migrants include Brahminy Starlings and
Orphean Warblers. Summer breeding visitors to these canal irrigated
regions include Small Button Quail, Yellow legged Button Quail, Rain
Quail and Barred Button Quail. The Barred Button Quail has been
discovered in Pakistan very recently. Currently the only place known
where the Barred Button Quail occurs in Pakistan is Dera Ghazi Khan.
