Top Birding Hot Spots in Pakistan - Punjab

Nammal Lake

Updated: 01/02/2006

By BCP member Muhammad Saad N Qaisrani

The Salt range of Pakistan is home to a great number of small lakes. Some examples are Nammal, Uchchali, Khabbaki and Kallar Kahar lake.

Each of these is quite small in size, but recieves an amazingly good number of wintering waterfowl. Amongst these, Nammal is located near the southern  end of Punjab Salt Range. It is located near Musa Khel, in Mianwali.

This lake is known for the surprises it delivers. Many species that have very restricted occurence in Pakistan, or are not regular migrants to Pakistan have been recorded here. Even better, it is located within small distance of 2 other important birding sites, namely Sakesar Valley and  Chashma Barrage. This lake is one of the 1st places in Pakistan where the Red necked Grebe was ever seen. Similarly, it is the only place in Pakistan where the Red throated Pipit was ever seen. Only names of birds that are rare in Pakistan and are very hard to see have been listed.

Some very rare birds that have been recorded at Nammal Lake are:

  1. White headed Duck

  2. Ferruginous Pochard

  3. Greylag Geese

  4. Smew

  5. Goosander

  6. Red throated Pipit

  7. Red necked Grebe
