A brown bear family sighted in Hundrap, Ghizer

Gilgit, June 21: The Snow Leopard Foundation, Pakistan, has said that a family of Brown Bear has been sighted in Hundrap area of Phandar, located in Ghizer District of Gilgit – Baltistan. According to a press statement members of an occupancy survey team sighted the Brown Bear family from an approximate distance of almost 100m.

The site occupancy survey in Pahndar was a two week activity to document occurrence of large carnivores, the press statement states, in which an area comprising of 51 grid cells (5 x 5 km each) were searched by six experienced researchers. The main localities surveyed included Langer, Barsit, Teru, Hundrab, Serbal and Chashi. The presence of brown bear, wolf, fox and ibex was confirmed in different parts of the area through their signs. Sighting of brown bear in Hundrab strengthened the evidences.

RAWALPINDI, Oct 14: The Punjab wildlife department here on Thursday recovered 53 Siberian falcons and arrested a man before he could send the birds to Qatar after catching them from Cholistan.

Special Judicial Magistrate Nazarat Ali Shah sent Mazhar Ali Shah to Adiala jail after he failed to submit surety bonds worth Rs100,000 to be released on bail. The case will be taken up on October 28.

THE report that the government has granted 28 special hunting permits to certain sheikhs from the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar for hunting the houbara bustard that comes from Central Asia to winter in Pakistan will leave conservationists feeling angry and disappointed.

The ministry of foreign affairs issued a special hunting permit to the dignitary allowing him to hunt 200 houbara bustards in Thar desert for 10 days.

KARACHI: The federal government has issued 28 special permits to the rulers, members of ruling families and other dignitaries of four Gulf states to hunt the internationally protected Houbara bustard during the 2010-2011 season, according to reliable sources.
