A brown bear family sighted in Hundrap, Ghizer

Gilgit, June 21: The Snow Leopard Foundation, Pakistan, has said that a family of Brown Bear has been sighted in Hundrap area of Phandar, located in Ghizer District of Gilgit - Baltistan. According to a press statement members of an occupancy survey team sighted the Brown Bear family from an approximate distance of almost 100m.
The site occupancy survey in Pahndar was a two week activity to document occurrence of large carnivores, the press statement states, in which an area comprising of 51 grid cells (5 x 5 km each) were searched by six experienced researchers. The main localities surveyed included Langer, Barsit, Teru, Hundrab, Serbal and Chashi. The presence of brown bear, wolf, fox and ibex was confirmed in different parts of the area through their signs. Sighting of brown bear in Hundrab strengthened the evidences.

MANSEHRA: The black bear, which had attacked and seriously injured a woman and her son last week, was found shot dead along with her two cubs in Hangrai area of Kaghan valley on Tuesday.
“Yes, someone has shot and killed a black bear and her two cubs as the bear family had come down to populated area after the heavy snowfall and injured two people last week,” Khursheed Abbasi, range officer of wildlife department, told mediapersons.
A team of wildlife department, led by district forest officer wildlife Mohammad Faiq Khan, reached the Hungrai following the killing of black bear and her two cubs and sensitised the local community to the importance of wildlife in the area.

MUZAFFARABAD: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Wildlife Department found the body of an Asiatic black bear in Rahimkot village on Saturday and have started investigations into its death.
The female bear was spotted by an AJK Forest Department official, Chaudhry Ilyas, as it ‘lay dead in a water channel’.

ABBOTTABAD, PAKISTAN — Osama bin Laden hid out here for months, if not years. But in the hills surrounding this town in northwestern Pakistan, residents say they face a far scarier menace than terrorists.
With descriptive stories that bring to mind mythological tales of man vs. beast, Abbottabad residents claim to be locked in a terrifying battle against Pakistan’s endangered population of leopards. The big cats — referred to as common leopards to distinguish them from their smaller cousins, snow leopards — lurk in the Himalayan foothills.
At dusk, common leopards slink out of the mountains into the farming villages that have been steadily encroaching deeper into Pakistan’s forests.
Then, residents say, they pounce — killing at least four people and injuring several others over the past four years.
“The leopard just sucked the blood out of her, and then she was dead,” said Zakir Abbasi, 36, recounting a leopard attack in January that killed his 7-year-old niece, Saba Noor.

Marine experts claim that the dead whale found in Karachi’s waters was not an Arabian Humpback but a blue whale.
They claim that although the blue whale is common in many oceans, it is considered to be an endangered species. “It is 67-foot-long and it is a blue whale not a humpback,” said Moazzam Khan, the technical adviser of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)-Pakistan and the chairperson of the Pakistan Whales and Dolphin Society.

MANSEHRA:
The Wildlife Authorities seized a leopard cub on Thursday, from a village of Gidarpur forest range. The female cub is said to be three months old and was shifted to Dhodiyal Peasantry, according to WA officials.
“She is healthy and has no injury marks on her body,” said an official.
Mansehra Sub divisional Wildlife officer Khurshid Abbasi claimed he received a tip about a leopard being poached by some villagers, so he led a raid Wednesday night in the forest.
